Marram grass, our official family weed
The first person carrying our family name appeared in official registers around 1590. That person had as an occupation to attend to the grass growing in the dunes by the North Sea coast (marram grass, or helmgras in Dutch). The grass is essential to keep the dunes together, and to protect The Netherlands against the North Sea. This grass could be considered our official family weed.
