If the operator is truthful in saying he was closing down for the night, it seems likely to me that sabatoge was involved. The crane had been working all day, under loads, w/o mishap. Perhaps one or two nuts were removed.

That jobsite has intermittently been mothballed and restarted over a period of years, and the crane was even removed and returned at one point. A while back I saw that the crane was installed on a steel platform attached to concrete piers. It impressed me at the time as a jacklegged work-around for some sort of problem which should have had a better solution. In any case, a solid concrete foundation is the typical installation for this type of crane. When I heard on the news that a crane had collapsed in Bellevue, I didn't spend a lot of time wondering which one it was, and my very first thought was of that particular crane. My expectation is that investigators will find that a non-standard installaton coupled with poor maintenance over a period of years at a financially strapped project were the cause of the accident. It's conceivable it was sabotage, but other factors may adequately explain the mishap.

These photos are very interesting. I heard about this on the news when it happened and I was horrified.
