The poles are for testing the strength of the ice. And in the backpacks you have an extra set of dry clothes in case you plunder through the ice. And, of course, the food that you can eat during the breaks. BTW we did 27 km yesterday

for what.. just skating? what are the poles and backpacks for? looks nice.. wish i had tried outdoor skating in all the years ive been going to finland.. i can roller blade pretty well.. so should be easy?
