Thanks for sharing your poem. In my assignment, I'm working on I'm incorporating some race identity information for the character development. It is brave to approach the topic. There was a time when I wouldn't have thought so, or perhaps hadn't fumbled so much. In an Intergroup Dialogue class, I really struggled when we got to the course work involving race. I was surprised by this and very stressed out. In fact I ended up with a major case of writer's block, which is no good since I'm an English major and my professional duties require that I write monster reports. Turned out I wasn't so comfortable with my identity. I'm half white and half Native American; I have white privelge that goes with my skin. Caught myself using it and totally was thrown; had to develop the awareness. In your poem it seemed like you were referring to your race as inconsequential to your interests. Is there anything about writing this piece that stressed you out or caused pause? I enjoy reading your work. Regards.

You're poem is a great example of doing your own thing. It makes me happy that you brought awareness to this. I am sure there are many white people that enjoy hip hop dancing. I think it's just that they might not dance in front of others for impression management. I'm sure there are many other examples of this from any stereotype one can choose.

your poem reminded me of Gwendolyn Brook's poem on race, "We Real Cool"
THE POOL PLAYERS.
SEVEN AT THE GOLDEN SHOVEL.
We real cool. We
Left school. We
Lurk late. We
Strike straight. We
Sing sin. We
Thin gin. We
Jazz June. We
Die soon.
your style is similar in it's simplicity, and the rythm also feels alike. i like your poem for the same reason i like her's, we are able to interpret your emotions without the poem being overloaded with them. i appreciate that you didn't sensor yourself in fear of stereotyping, because the stereotypes you chose are very relevant in pop culture. i don't feel as though you stepped on any toes there, your point was clear and executed well. were you nervous about offending anyone with the stereotypes of hiphop and sports?

I was a little nervous but my intentions moralistic are not to offend people. I am sharing things I love and can't look at what other people believe. I think things I said are stereotyped and whether we like to admit it or not, they are. I really didn't pause in writing this because I believe we should all be who we are. A quote I came up with is what I always go by:
"Me I am, me I'll be, me I'll stay."
