I feel that in my dreams I have tunnel vision. I only see what is infront of me and what is the most important to the story unfolding in my dream. That being said what is in focus is very clear, and I can remember the dialect if there is any. The picture above is a good example of how I experience dreams.

If the story I shared yesterday had simply occured to me in a dream it would likely happen as such...

I found myself in a class room with circular tables scattered about. Around all of the chairs at each table there were pink and blue name tags with each childs name. I easily found my seat marked by a blue name tag with "Jordan" written on it. As I looked across the room I saw a boy with curly hair crying hysterically. I felt very confused at what had gotten him in such a predicament. At the same time I felt absolutely helpless, like I could not do anything to help him. He was just a few feet away from me, but he might as well been miles.
Then it ended.....

What it would be like if this was a dream piece written from Courtney's perspective?

Your story is a good example of how gender is instilled into our brains from such an early age. Four and five year olds are taught that there is something very different about the opposite sex, and this grows to the belief that they are almost a different species (i.e. boys have cooties). Was Courtney made fun of my the other students for having a “girls” name, or did the whole thing just blow over?

For years to come we would always laugh about the mix up, and how upset he was. But I never felt like he was ever teased for having the name Courtney, and predominantly girl's name.

Haha, this reminds me of a time when I was 6 or so and my best friend walked into the girls bathroom and told me I was in the wrong bathroom. She thought, at that piont, I was a little boy because of my hair cut. It's now very funny to look back on...

Gender is assigned so early; from the pink or blue caps at birth to the name your parents give you. It would be difficult as a child, especially if you didn't feel as though you were "in the wrong gender", to have a traditionally female name as a male.

Anyway, I'm suprised that you can remember this! This story didn't even center on you and you were five! I'm glad it stuck with you, it's was a very good example of how gender is taught to us from such a young age, and how anything outside of the assigned boxes is ridiculed. Thanks for sharing!

How did you make that picture or did you find it? I know I have been commenting on people's artwork or images but these are of interest to me because I think artwork selection says a lot about a person. Your story is an experience I think we all can relate to which makes it wonderful to write because as you can seem many people can discuss about it.
