Kounoungou camp. Comes from West Darfur. Mariam is a teacher for young children in the camp. She used to work as a traditional midwife for IMC (International Medical Corps) in the camp. She left Darfur in 2004 after her village was bombed by an Antonov plane and attacked by militia<br /><br />Kounougou camp has 13,500 refugees from Darfur and is located near the town of Guereda, in eastern Chad. An extension of the camp has been set up in order to welcome new refugees who escaped attacks on their villages in West Darfur in February 2008. An estimated 10 to 13,000 new refugees crossed the border over to Chad, in the Birak area. UNHCR started to transport them from the border to the camp in March. As of April 1st, 4,200 refugees had been moved to the Kounoungou.<br /><br />The United Nation’s High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) works around the world to support an estimated thirty-three million refugees. As part of Pangea Day, Nokia has supplied fifty mobile devices to fifty refugees in twenty-eight countries. By highlighting the refugees’ stories through film we hope to increase understanding and support for these displaced people.
