As lion are seen as the kings of the beasts on land, so tiger fish are Africa's freshwater piscatorial predators. They are the most extraordinary species in freshwater with the power and aggression of many of their saltwater brethren. Amazingly they often continue to attack the fly until they are hooked and the fight is hard and brutal, often punctuated with aerial acrobatics and long hard runs. The experience of fishing for them in the unique surroundings which Africa affords should place this thoroughly underrated fish towards the top of any fisherman's list. Although tiger fish are active all the year round, the best time coincides with the end of the floods as the flood water which has been on the plain is sucked back into the river. This pulls all the baitfish, which have been breeding in the flooded areas, into the waiting packs of tiger fish.
