These curious shapes were formed when a nearby volcano erupted - light colored tufa (hard ash) falling first, then black lava (basalt) flowed over the area. Cracks formed, and over millions of years and much erosion, these awsome shapes were left. Many were hollowed out to make caves for homes & early Christian churches.
