I did a back-of-the-envelope calculation regarding whether a jet-powered hybrid airplane/hot-air dirigible was technically feasible. Turns out that it is. The fuselage would be based upon the last of the American dirigibles (which actually had metal skins). It would be nearly 500 feet long, would use two turbojet engines and a heat exchanger for lift, and incorporate a gallery around its waist giving everyone a large window seat, acres of legroom, and s stateroom. It would have the weight and capacity of a 747. Although it would travel at only about 100 knots, it also would be able to land on water or at any airstrip that could physically fit it, and a full-on crash might be survivable. Shown below is my particular dirigible fantasy - island-hopping and cruising from Miami down to Rio while enjoying formal dinners, cocktail hour, and a nightclub featuring a big band. Oh well....
