(AP Photo/Marcus R. His passion for giving and civic duty is infectious and the crowd at the Microsoft Conference Center this morning was alternately awed and animated by his pro-giving speech that was the perfect wrap up to the Microsoft Giving Campaign. We have raised just over $72 million dollars so far this year, with close to 61% of our employees participating.

Clinton focused on the virtues of volunteering time, money, ideas, skills and “things” to worthy causes and steered fairly clear of politics, except for a couple of amusing references to his potential role as a Presidential spouse. He talked a lot about his book, Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World. Clinton believes that that stopping global warming depends on demonstrating that it makes economic sense, which he believes wholeheartedly. He talked of climate change as a great economic opportunity. "We will not get a global agreement on climate change unless you can prove this is not a burden," he said. "This is the greatest opportunity we have had in our lifetimes." blogs.msdn.com/karinm/archive/2007/11/03/bill-clinton-at-microsoft-what-an-inspiration.aspx

<media:group>

</media:group>
Clinton and Balmer

Former President Bill Clinton with Microsoft Corporation CEO Steve Ballmer. Not all of our samples have 64-bit support, but it’s quick and easy to configure the sample yourself using the project configurations available in the Visual Studio Integrated Development Environment (IDE).
To develop 64-bit applications you must install one or both of the Visual C++ 64-bit compilers. Without these compilers on your dev machine, 64-bit project configurations will not be available in the IDE. See Installing Visual Studio 64-bit Components on MSDN for more about this.

First, I describe how to change the active project configuration to target 64-bit platforms using the Visual Studio IDE. Next, I describe how to migrate Win32 project settings into a 64-bit project configuration.

blogs.msdn.com/karinm/archive/2007/11/02/how-to-add-64-bit-support-to-vcproj-files.aspx

<media:group>

</media:group>
How to: Add 64-bit support to .vcproj files

How to: Add 64-bit support to .vcproj files
Have you found a great sample in the Windows SDK but wish it could target 64-bit platforms? The series is unusual because it doesn’t targeting any specific technology, focusing instead on building the right set of information source to keep you up to date and help manage through constant change. Some excellent speakers are lined up for the webcasts, which run from September 11th through October 9th. Thanks to John Bristowe for a head’s up on Ignite Your Career. The sessions:

Becoming a Better Developer - September 11
Building your Skill Set - September 18
Discovering your Trusted Resources - September 25
Becoming your own Boss - October 2
Creating your Startup Business - October 9
Details and registration.

Some tips may be targeted for Canadian-based developers, but it looks like the great majority of the content is valuable to a developer in any location.

msdn2.microsoft.com/en-ca/bb738057.aspx

<media:group>

</media:group>
Ignite Your Career

Become a better developer: Ignite Your Career
Microsoft Canada will host 5 webcasts on the fundamentals of being a more effective developer and managing your career. The sessions:

Becoming a Better Developer - September 11
Building your Skill Set - September 18
Discovering your Trusted Resources - September 25
Becoming your own Boss - October 2
Creating your Startup Business - October 9
Details and registration.

Some tips may be targeted for Canadian-based developers, but it looks like the great majority of the content is valuable to a developer in any location.

msdn2.microsoft.com/en-ca/bb738057.aspx

Burning Life (in Second Life)

I’ve always wanted to go to Burning Man, the annual countercultural arts festival, but with both Windows Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 screaming towards RTM I can’t possibly take time for a jaunt to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. It presents the most astounding possibilities of any technology I’ve seen. Even playing with it myself I can’t believe it’s real. Using photos of frequently photographed places (NASA Space Shuttle, Piazza San Pietro, Rome, Gyeongbok Palace in Korea) scraped from around the Web, Photosynth (based on Seadragon technology) creates breathtaking multidimensional spaces with zoom and navigation features that will stretch your mind. Check out the Photosynth collections, where you can access gigabytes of photos in seconds, view a scene from nearly any angle, find similar photos with a single click, and zoom in to make the smallest detail as big as your monitor. (Technical difficulties? Check the Photosynth FAQ for help.)

How does it work? According to Wikipedia, the program works by analyzing multiple photographs taken of the same area. Each photograph is processed by noting specific features, like the corner of a window frame or a door handle. Photos that share features are then linked together in a web. When the same feature is found in multiple images, its 3D position can be calculated. Photosynth's 3D model is a cloud of points showing where these features are in space. This model enables the program to show a particular area from various angles, based on the different angles found in the photos.

In this video (which takes a couple minutes to load), architect Blaise Aguera y Arcas demos Photosynth at the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Conference in Monterey, CA.
