Performance Title: Sixteen to Sixty

Location: Wymondham, Norfolk – distance from Cambridge: approx. 60 miles

Time & Duration: 3 p.m. for one hour

Weather conditions: Rain, thunder and lightning

The past is a foreign country – to quote a writer whose name I cannot recall.

This year I celebrated my 60th birthday and the distance between me and my African girlhood grows ever greater. My attempts to recapture the past include using my greenhouse to grow tropical plants that were once so familiar to me: most notably, the Frangipani – a small tree with fragrant white flowers.

The Frangipani seeds I acquired germinated well but in the artificial environment of the greenhouse they have grown with a pronounced lean – as if reaching towards their warm, far-distant home. My performative act on this wet Sunday afternoon was to try uprighting my little trees by re-potting them and also sowing the seeds of African Marigolds which were the first ever flowers I grew as a child. They require careful temperature control in the greenhouse for some weeks before they can safely be planted outside.

Shutting myself in the greenhouse with the plants, safe from the elements and reality, I strip off my warm woollens. I yearn to be on that same tropical beach in the photograph, when I was sixteen, wearing the same bikini. I too am in an artificial environment, reaching towards an irretrievable past.

Mapping Lives - part of Distance/Cambridge project

On Sunday I was visiting my brother, who has lived in Prague for many years now. I had the idea for a very simple work reflecting our past life together (in childhood) and adult distance.

We drew on maps of the world and Europe all places we had spent more than 2 weeks in, with our journeys mine green, Tim's red on maps, with one map per 7 years or so.

Artist statement:
Natasha makes live art and recorded voice installations. Pieces are developed for a particular environment, which is more likely to be a park, café, boat-shed or drawing room than a gallery. She is interested in work that creates connections between people and places. She will often use humour and also an element of one-to-one interaction whether in the process of development or as live performance. She’s a recent graduate of Wimbledon College of Art, University of the Arts London.
Natasha previously read Natural Sciences at Churchill College, Cambridge University and has a background in Public Relations.

I decided to take a picture a minute on the way to work this morning, I was too ill last night to contribute at the right time. I walk for our small apartment over a gym over the bridge past the Ajumma (extraordinarily strong women who push very large carts all over the city) into the little area of Jung Gok to arrive at my school.
Tomorrow this walk will be history for me as we are moving.

International simultaneous performance with members of the Cambridge Group and invited guest artists.

My neighbor Rudy rode/walked his bike the 1.7 miles to the local diner on Route 7 and back every day for the more than 30 years that I knew him. The diner burned down this winter, during his final stay in the hospital, all that’s left is a concrete foundation.

Today, starting at Rudy's driveway, I rode/walked this route between 10 and 11am EST-- traversing space, time, and memory to connect with Rudy, and with my colleagues (who were in many different time zones) simultaneously creating their own pieces on the theme of Distance).
