Hemsley Discussion with Students

Informal discussion between lighting designer, Gilbert Hemsley and the student delegation to the 1976 OISTAT convention on theater technology where Hemsley discusses his perspective on lighting design, production management and things that young designers should contemplate when thinking about a professional career in the theater. This discussion was held over brunch in Amsterdam on the way to the convention in Prague, Czechoslovakia which was held in conjunction with the Prague Quadrennial Exhibition of Scenography and Theater Architecture. The background noises from the kitchen come and go and are worse at the beginning of the tape but improve after the first 8 minutes or so.

Meilziner Discussion with Students

Master Set Designer, Joseph Meilziner discusses his training both as child in Europe and later in the United States as an apprentice. He discusses the responsibility of the production designer to shape the entire look of show and he is very frank in his opinions regarding the current state of design training in America. This discussion was held over brunch in Amersterdam with the student delegation traveling to the 1976 OISTAT convention in Prague, Czechoslovakia which was being held in conjunction with the Prague Quadrennial Exhibition of Scenography and Theater Architecture. The voice that joins the conversation towards the end belongs to lighitng equipment pioneer, Eddy Kook.

Master set designer, Jo Meilziner, gives a speech at the 1976 OISTAT conference in Prague, Czechoslovakia entitiled "On The Training of Theater Scenographers". Meilziner is outspoken on the subject of universities in the United States and their shortcomings regarding training theater designers. This conference was held in conjunction with the 1975 Prague Quadrennial International Exhibition of Scenography and Theater Architecture.
