I have been contemplating the infamous Trojan Horse whose deus-ex-machina arrival at the edge of Troy stirred wonder among the gullible citizens, only to lure them to their demise.
I think such thoughts because another mighty horse has been steered into our midst, and like Trojans we have thrown open the gates to welcome it in.
I am referring to the onslaught of wireless technologies in the form of microwave towers, satellites showering the planet with radiation, Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) ports, Wireless Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) antennas -- plus all the gadgets they make possible: cordless phones, pagers, Blackberries, roving laptops, wireless water meters, satellite TV and radio, in-flight internet. I am referring as well to the electromagnetic weapons, radiation-emitting stations, surveillance instruments, and crowd-control devices military and law enforcement deploy.
These sources of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, or radiofrequency, present a frightening specter. Some 3,000-plus medical, biological, and epidemiological studies have demonstrated links between exposure and deterioration of the blood-brain barrier that blocks viruses and bacteria, DNA damage, leukemia, nervous system disorders, immune deficiency, heart arrhythmias and coronaries, insomnia, anxiety, depression, memory loss, dizziness, deafness, brain tumors, etc.
And who is poised to slam the gates on this interloper? Not many. Somehow a population with DDT, Love Canal, the Dalkon Shield Intrauterine Device, asbestos, Three Mile Island, and Agent Orange under its belt is mustering up the same old psychological defenses it used to not learn from those debacles.

What You Don't Know Can Harm You!

Sorry for the delay in replying to this! While I have gotten used to people - (who haven't done any research whatsoever on this topic) - jumping to conclusions and claiming with their "expert" opinion that I am either (1) "Alarmist;" (2) "Psychosomatic" (i.e. I am imagining my symptoms); or (3) that I "have a phobia;" it still doesn't mean that I enjoy listening to their erroneous and premature conclusions.

First of all, to have a phobia means to be afraid of something that cannot hurt you. However, on the other hand, to NOT be afraid of something that can indeed hurt you we can certainly call "Ignorance" (in the case that people are unaware of the danger) or in fact "Stupidity" (when they are indeed aware of the danger but continue to engage in the dangerous behavior).

Secondly, I was terribly sick for six months with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and increasingly getting worse before I even imagined that it might be due to the microwave radiation being emitted from a number of cell phone masts 300 meters away from my apartment or from the microwave radiation being emitted from my adjacent neighbors' WiFi systems or from the cell phone I carried on my body but hardly ever used.

Thirdly, to be alarmist means to "cause unnecessary fear and anxiety." And that is not the case at all. Indeed we want people to be afraid of "what can indeed hurt them" (so they can take necessary action) and not the other way around.

Complaint Filed Over Health Effects of French Mobile Antenna

A French mobile phone company could face criminal charges for "administration of a harmful substance," following a complaint by a family living near one of its base station transmitters.
The complaint filed Wednesday blames radio signals from an antenna erected by Bouygues Telecom in 2000 for the health problems, including tachycardia and cardiac arrhythmia, of one of two 17-year-old twins living in Chevreuse, southwest of Paris, according to the family's lawyer, Richard Forget.
The state prosecutor now has three months to decide whether to launch an investigation, after which time Forget will seek recognition by the court to pursue the case.
Forget believes it's the first complaint to equate mobile phone signals to a harmful substance, and also the first that could result in criminal charges against a mobile phone network operator. Bouygues is the only operator to have an antenna in the area where the family lives, he said.
Another factor in the complaint is a note from the family's cardiologist, relating the change in the 17-year-old's health to the operation of the transmitter, which entered service in 2003.
Bouygues Telecom has no comment to make on the matter, a representative said.
The effects on health of mobile phone signals has been much studied and debated, but the results have so far been inconclusive.
Employees of the Paris city authority have also blamed radio signals for their health problems, and forced the city to shut down free Wi-Fi access points installed in some public buildings.

In the later part of the hearing, Kucinich asked whether cell phone radiation could cause non-thermal effects. Carpenter responded that "there are literally hundreds of experimental studies in animals and cells that show effects without heating." But, he said, the strongest evidence comes from epidemiology, specifically the increase in brain cancer after ten years of use.

Herberman agreed that there are "quite a number of studies" that show effects and damage. "[What] struck me the most," Herberman said, "are several reports from very experienced credible scientists of damage to the DNA, which we know is the central mechanism for developing tumors and malignant cancer."

Kucinich followed up by asking, "How would that happen?… How could RF radiation conceivably change or damage DNA?" Herberman, who acknowledged that this was indeed "surprising," responded that his "favorite hypothesis" was that the RF signal generates reactive oxygen species, which can damage DNA.

When Hoover was asked to comment, he raised concerns as to the reliability of the papers on RF-induced DNA breaks. "I know that very recently there have been reports of the ability to do genetic damage," he said. "Some of them, I guess, are currently under scrutiny, as to whether they might be withdrawn or not. So, I think the area is actually still evolving."

In many ways, last Thursday's Congressional hearing on cell phone cancer risks, called by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), brought few surprises. David Carpenter and Ronald Herberman made the case for precaution, especially for children, while National Cancer Institute's Robert Hoover countered that he is not persuaded that there's anything to worry about.

One piece of compelling news did emerge, however —though it never made it into the mainstream press: Brain cancer appears to be on the rise among young adults. Herberman testified that, on looking at government statistics, he was "struck" by the fact that the incidence of brain cancer has been increasing over the last ten years, particularly among 20-29 year-olds. If the latency for brain tumors is more than ten years and cell phone are in fact responsible for the increase, cancer rates might not peak for at least another five years, according to Herberman.

Herberman's analysis stands in sharp contrast to Hoover's assessment of the same data. Government statistics show no increase from 1987 to 2005, Hoover said at the hearing. If Herberman is right, he would puncture a central, albeit indirect, argument in favor of the safety of cell phone. The NCI, among others, argues that brain cancer rates are stable, and therefore that cell phones are not doing any harm. "Thus far, brain cancer incidence trends in the U.S. are unrelated to patterns of cell phone use," Hoover told Kucinich. In response to Herberman, Hoover offered to provide the subcommittee with the most recent government cancer statistics.

Study of 13,000 children exposes link between use of handsets and later behavioral problems

Women who use mobile phones when pregnant are more likely to give birth to children with behavioural problems, according to authoritative research.
A giant study, which surveyed more than 13,000 children, found that using the handsets just two or three times a day was enough to raise the risk of their babies developing hyperactivity and difficulties with conduct, emotions and relationships by the time they reached school age. And it adds that the likelihood is even greater if the children themselves used the phones before the age of seven.
The results of the study, the first of its kind, have taken the top scientists who conducted it by surprise. But they follow warnings against both pregnant women and children using mobiles by the official Russian radiation watchdog body, which believes that the peril they pose "is not much lower than the risk to children's health from tobacco or alcohol".
The research – at the universities of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Aarhus, Denmark – is to be published in the July issue of the journal Epidemiology and will carry particular weight because one of its authors has been sceptical that mobile phones pose a risk to health.

THE spate of deaths among young people in Britain’s suicide capital could be linked to radio waves from dozens of mobile phone transmitter masts near the victims’ homes.
Dr Roger Coghill, who sits on a Government advisory committee on mobile radiation, has discovered that all 22 youngsters who have killed themselves in Bridgend, South Wales, over the past 18 months lived far closer than average to a mast.

He has examined worldwide studies linking proximity of masts to depression. Dr Coghill’s work is likely to trigger alarm and lead to closer scrutiny of the safety of masts, which are frequently sited on public buildings such as schools and hospitals.

It is also likely to fuel more campaigns against placing masts close to public places on health grounds.

Dr Coghill said last night there was strong circumstantial evidence that the masts may have triggered depression in those from Bridgend who took their lives.

They include Kelly Stephenson, 20, who hanged herself from a shower rail in February this year while on holiday in Folkestone, Kent.

Dr Coghill said: “There is a body of research that has over the years pointed to the fact that exposure to mobile radiation can lead to depression. There is evidence of higher suicide rates where people live near any electrical equipment that gives off radio or electrical waves.”
There are now 70 million mobile phone handsets in the UK and around 50,000 masts. Both emit radio signals and electromagnetic fields that can penetrate the brain, and for many years campaigners have argued that this could seriously damage people’s health.

Libraries switch off wi-fi internet

Four libraries in Paris have turned off their wi-fi internet connections after staff claimed they were causing health problems.

The latest to shut down its wireless network is the wireless Sainte-Genevieve university library in the 5th arrondissement after a member of staff threatened to take early retirement on health grounds.

The library has had wi-fi installed since the end of 2007. All computer users will now have to plug their laptops into the conventional fixed-line network.

In his letter to his employers, the shop worker stated: “Over the last few months, and increasingly over the last few weeks, I have suffered strong symptoms associated with the wi-fi network.

“Other sources of electromagnetic radiation, including mobile phones, have also played a part.”

“Symptoms have included headaches, balance problems, general weakness, stress and sight problems.”

A spokesman for the library confirmed the wi-fi had been switched off while associated health problems were investigated.

Spokesman for Agir Pour L’Environnement, an environmental pressure group, Stéphane Kerckhove supported the decision.

He said: “Some people insist that the symptoms are psychosomatic. This could be the cause but at the moment there is absolutely no proof of that.

“Wi-fi is a recent invention, and in the long term no one knows what the health effects are going to be.

“If there are complaints, and a library is equipped to give a fixed-line internet service, then it is better to be safe than sorry and protect the health of library workers until we know what the health effects are.”

Like television and computer games, cellphones can be a monumental waste of time for children. Endless hours of yakking to friends means hours not spent doing something more worthwhile.
But now there is a new reason for parents to be concerned about their children's cellphone use.
Some preliminary studies suggest that people who use cellphones for long periods are at greater risk of developing brain tumours. And children, with their thinner skulls and developing nervous systems, may be at greater risk than adults. Furthermore, because children today have begun using cellphones at an earlier age than previous generations, their exposure will be far greater over their lifetimes.
The cellphone industry hotly disputes these findings. But the Toronto Board of Health is taking a precautionary stand and urging parents to limit their children's use of cellphones to essential purposes, to restrict the length of their calls and to have them use headsets.
Similar warnings have already been issued in several European countries and Russia.
"It's an educational process," Dr. David McKeown, Toronto's medical officer of health, said in an interview. "Parents need to have the information and make up their own minds."
But out of sight is out of mind as far as young cellphone users are concerned. In today's youth market, it's cool to be armed with a cellphone. What may not be so cool is turning it off.
There is, however, another option for tech-savvy young people. Text messaging is reportedly a safe alternative. As an added bonus, most parents don't know how to use it.

Electronic smog 'is disrupting nature on a massive scale'

Mobile phones, Wi-Fi systems, electric power lines and similar sources of "electrosmog" are disrupting nature on a massive scale, causing birds and bees to lose their bearings, fail to reproduce and die, a conference will be told this week.
Dr Ulrich Warnke – who has been researching the effects of man-made electrical fields on wildlife for more than 30 years – will tell the conference, organised by the Radiation Research Trust at the Royal Society in London, that "an unprecedented dense mesh of artificial magnetic, electrical and electromagnetic fields" has been generated, overwhelming the "natural system of information" on which the species rely.
He believes this could be responsible for the disappearance of bees in Europe and the US in what is known as colony collapse disorder, for the decline of the house sparrow, whose numbers have fallen by half in Britain over the past 30 years, and that it could also interfere with bird migration.
Dr Warnke, a lecturer at the University of Saarland, in Germany, adds that the world's natural electrical and magnetic fields have had a "decisive hand in the evolution of species". Over millions of years they learned to use them to work out where they were, the time of day, and the approach of bad weather.
Now, he says, "man-made technology has created transmitters which have fundamentally changed the natural electromagnetic energies and forces on the earth's surface. Animals that depend on natural electrical, magnetic and electromagnetic fields for their orientation and navigation are confused by the much stronger and constantly changing artificial fields."

Cell phones can affect sperm quality, researcher says

"We believe that these devices are used because we consider them very safe, but it could cause harmful effects due to the proximity of the phones and the exposure that they are causing to the gonads," says lead researcher Ashok Agarwal, the Director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine.
In the small study, Agarwal's team took semen samples from 32 men and brought them to the lab. Each man's sample was placed into small, conical tubes and divided into two parts: a test group and a control group. The control group was unexposed to cell phone emissions, but kept under the same conditions and temperature as the test group.
The semen in the test group was placed 2.5 centimeters from an 850 MHz cell phone in talk mode for 1 hour. Researchers say that 850 MHz is the most commonly used frequency.
They used the measurement of 2.5 centimeters to mimic the distance between the trouser pocket and the testes. Agarwal reasoned that many men keep their active cell phones in their pants pocket while talking on their headsets.
Overall, researchers found an increase in oxidative stress such as a significant increase in free radicals and oxidants and a decrease in antioxidants. Agarwal says that equals a decrease in sperm's quality, including motility and viability. Evidence of oxidative stress can appear under other conditions, including exposure to certain environmental pollutants or infections in the urinary genital tract.
"On average, there was an 85 percent increase in the amount of free radicals for all the subjects in the study. Free radicals have been linked to a variety of diseases in humans including cancer," said Agarwal. Free radicals have been linked to decreased sperm quality in previous studies.

I don’t have a brilliant memory, but occasionally something someone tells me does somehow stick in my mind. One such memory I have concerns a patient I saw some years ago. He had had a brain tumor (I forget what sort) removed, and was interested in supporting his convalescence and general health through nutrition. During our consultation he remarked that he had a son who also had had a brain tumor. I asked if his doctors thought there was any genetic link. He replied in the negative, and told me it was his opinion that mobile phones were the cause. This man went on to tell me that both he and his son were early adopters of this technology, and by their own admission were heavy users too.

He went on to tell me a story about an experience he had after his operation. He was sitting in a packed waiting room full of post-surgical patients. Nearly all the patients in the room had brain tumors removed and the scars to prove it. A conversation about mobile phones started in the waiting room, so my patient decided to take a straw poll then and there. All the patients who had had brain tumors turned out to be mobile phone users. Now, there’s nothing particularly telling here I think, because mobile phone use is so common. However, my patient went one better in his poll by then asking each individual which ear they habitually held their mobile phone to. He reported to me that the side they indicated matched the side of their tumor in every case.

Brain expert warns of huge rise in tumours and calls on industry to take immediate steps to reduce radiation
Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take "immediate steps" to reduce exposure to their radiation.
The study, by Dr Vini Khurana, is the most devastating indictment yet published of the health risks.
It draws on growing evidence – exclusively reported in the IoS in October – that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer. Cancers take at least a decade to develop, invalidating official safety assurances based on earlier studies which included few, if any, people who had used the phones for that long.
Earlier this year, the French government warned against the use of mobile phones, especially by children. Germany also advises its people to minimise handset use, and the European Environment Agency has called for exposures to be reduced.
Professor Khurana – a top neurosurgeon who has received 14 awards over the past 16 years, has published more than three dozen scientific papers – reviewed more than 100 studies on the effects of mobile phones. He has put the results on a brain surgery website, and a paper based on the research is currently being peer-reviewed for publication in a scientific journal.

These are Mr Dolan's answers in full.
• Dr Carlo says people living close to the site are in real danger from EM radiation because the human body has not evolved to cope with the type of signals emitted from the masts - Is there any scientific evidence that people will not be harmed by radio waves?
In the UK the mobile network operators design and build their networks to comply with the International Commission on Non-ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) radio frequency (RF)public exposure health and safety guidelines.
Over 500 audits have been carried out by Ofcom since 2000 and these have reported that RF emission levels from mobile phone radio base stations are small fractions of the ICNIRP guidelines.
The World Health Organisation concluded in a Fact Sheet in 2006 that: "Considering the very low exposure levels and research results collected to date, there is no convincing scientific evidence that the weak RF signals from base stations and wireless networks cause adverse health effects."
In the summer of 2005 the World Health Organisation held a three day conference in Geneva on the safety of mobile phone and other wireless base stations which was attended by a large number of scientists and regulators from around the world.
It was as a result of the discussions at that conference that the WHO issued its 2006 Fact Sheet.

The research has shown that adults who have used the handsets for more than 10 years are much more likely to get gliomas and acoustic neuromas, but he said that there was not enough data to show how such relatively long-term use would increase the risk for those who had started young.
He wants more research to be done, but the risks to children will not be studied in the MTHR study, which will follow 90,000 people in Britain. Professor David Coggon, the chairman of the programmes management committee, said they had not been included because other research was being done on young people by a study at Sweden's Kariolinska Institute.
He said: "It looks frightening to see a five-fold increase in cancer among people who started use in childhood," but he said he "would be extremely surprised" if the risk was shown to be so high once all the evidence was in.
But David Carpenter, dean of the School of Public Health at the State University of NewYork – who also attended the conference – said: "Children are spending significant time on mobile phones. We may be facing a public health crisis in an epidemic of brain cancers as a result of mobile phone use."
In 2000 and 2005, two official inquiries under Sir William Stewart, a former government chief scientist, recommended the use of mobile phones by children should be "discouraged" and "minimised".
But almost nothing has been done, and their use by the young has more than doubled since the turn of the millennium.

It sprung from a further analysis of data from one of the biggest studies carried out into the risk that the radiation causes cancer, headed by Professor Lennart Hardell of the University Hospital in Orebro, Sweden. Professor Hardell told the conference – held at the Royal Society by the Radiation Research Trust – that "people who started mobile phone use before the age of 20" had more than five-fold increase in glioma", a cancer of the glial cells that support the central nervous system. The extra risk to young people of contracting the disease from using the cordless phone found in many homes was almost as great, at more than four times higher.
Those who started using mobiles young, he added, were also five times more likely to get acoustic neuromas, benign but often disabling tumours of the auditory nerve, which usually cause deafness.
By contrast, people who were in their twenties before using handsets were only 50 per cent more likely to contract gliomas and just twice as likely to get acoustic neuromas.
Professor Hardell told the IoS: "This is a warning sign. It is very worrying. We should be taking precautions." He believes that children under 12 should not use mobiles except in emergencies and that teenagers should use hands-free devices or headsets and concentrate on texting. At 20 the danger diminishes because then the brain is fully developed. Indeed, he admits, the hazard to children and teenagers may be greater even than his results suggest, because the results of his study do not show the effects of their using the phones for many years. Most cancers take decades to develop, longer than mobile phones have been on the market.

Alarming new research from Sweden on the effects of radiation raises fears that today's youngsters face an epidemic of the disease in later life

Children and teenagers are five times more likely to get brain cancer if they use mobile phones, startling new research indicates.
The study, experts say, raises fears that today's young people may suffer an "epidemic" of the disease in later life. At least nine out of 10 British 16-year-olds have their own handset, as do more than 40 per cent of primary schoolchildren.
Yet investigating dangers to the young has been omitted from a massive £3.1m British investigation of the risks of cancer from using mobile phones, launched this year, even though the official Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research (MTHR) Programme – which is conducting it – admits that the issue is of the "highest priority".
Despite recommendations of an official report that the use of mobiles by children should be "minimised", the Government has done almost nothing to discourage it.
Last week the European Parliament voted by 522 to 16 to urge ministers across Europe to bring in stricter limits for exposure to radiation from mobile and cordless phones, Wi-fi and other devices, partly because children are especially vulnerable to them. They are more at risk because their brains and nervous systems are still developing and because – since their heads are smaller and their skulls are thinner – the radiation penetrates deeper into their brains.
The Swedish research was reported this month at the first international conference on mobile phones and health.

European Parliament Recommends Stricter Safety Limits for Cell Phones

ALBANY, NY--(Marketwire - September 18, 2008) - University at Albany, Institute for Health and the Environment - The European Parliament has voted 522 to 16 to recommend tighter safety standards for cell phones. In light of the growing body of scientific evidence implicating cell phone use with brain tumors, the Parliament says, "The limits on exposure to electromagnetic fields [EMFs] which have been set for the general public are obsolete."
The European Parliament "is greatly concerned at the Bio-Initiative international report concerning EMFs, which summarises over 1500 studies on that topic and which points in its conclusions to the health risks posed by emissions from mobile-telephony devices such as mobile telephones, UMTS, WiFi, WiMax and Bluetooth, and also DECT landline telephones." Further, it points out the need to "address vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, newborn babies and children."
The Mid-Term Review of the European Environmental and Health Action Plan recommends 36 specific points for improving human health. It points to changes that can improve air and water quality, and reduce exposures to toxic chemicals and EMFs that have been linked to health risks. BioInitiative author Dr. Martin Blank, Columbia University professor and researcher in bioelectromagnetics says, "Cells in the body react to EMFs as potentially harmful, just like to other environmental toxins such as heavy metals and toxic chemicals.
The DNA in living cells recognizes EMFs at very low levels of exposure, and produces a biochemical stress response. The scientific evidence tells us that our safety standards are inadequate, and that we must protect ourselves from exposure to EMFs due to powerlines, cell phones and the like."

Court ruling allows regulation of cell towers

A federal appeals court reversed itself Thursday and said cities and counties can regulate the location and appearance of wireless towers and poles, a ruling that could revive a dormant San Francisco ordinance.
The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco upheld San Diego County's limits on the placement, size and design of towers and poles that are needed for companies to provide cell phone service and wireless Internet connections. The court also voted 11-0 to discard a standard it had established in 2001 that barred local governments from adopting any restrictions that "may have the effect of prohibiting" wireless services.
Federal courts in the nine-state circuit have relied on the 2001 ruling to overturn restrictions on telecommunications structures in several communities, including San Francisco and Berkeley. The court said Thursday that it had misinterpreted federal law when it issued the earlier ruling, and that local governments can regulate wireless towers and poles as long as they don't actually prohibit wireless service within their borders or create a "significant gap in service coverage."
San Diego County's 2003 ordinance was intended to keep unsightly structures out of neighborhoods. It required poles to be camouflaged in residential areas, set height limits, required companies to submit a "visual impact analysis," and allowed a zoning board to deny an application if it was inconsistent with the character of the community. Two courts had overturned the ordinance, based on the 2001 appellate standard, before Thursday's ruling reinstated it.

MARK COLVIN: New Swedish research suggests that children may be five times more likely to develop brain cancer if they use mobile phones.

The research argues that thinner skulls and smaller brains put children at much greater risk.

There have been many studies over the years pointing to the health risks posed by electro-magnetic radiation but none have found a causal link.

And critics say this research also falls short and that current health safety standards provide adequate protection.

Richard Lindell reports.

RICHARD LINDELL: Australia has one of the highest rates of mobile use in the world.

There are 21 million phones out there and more than half of all children under 18 own one.

But the health risks associated with a product in use for two decades are still hotly disputed.

Overnight, a Swedish study found that people who start using mobiles before the age of 20 are five times more likely to develop two types of brain cancers. One that targets the central nervous system and another benign tumour that can cause deafness.

MARC COUGHLAN: I think the issues that it raised are particularly whether or not, after latent periods for example 10 years, because mobile phones are becoming as you know much more common and more frequently used and I think we're spending more time on the phone.

So the question is whether after a latent period we're going to see more of these brain tumours and then in retrospect we might be looking back and I guess specifically for that paper it just raises questions as to whether children are more susceptible to the potential damage done by electromagnetic radiation. Because we do know the paediatric brain is a little bit more susceptible to any noxious stimuli.

A WOMAN allergic to 21st century life is being evicted from the Bishop's Stortford flat she claims is her "safe haven".
Lesley Moylette, who suffers from electrosensitivity, has been given two weeks to leave her home in Windhill after she was taken to court by housing association South Anglia.
Her condition, whih sufferers believe is due to electromagnetic fields emitted by electrical appliances, causes symptoms including insomnia and migraines.
However, since moving to her daughter Sam's two-bedroom flat 47-year-old Lesley's health has improved as she believes the property is relatively free from electro-waves. She keeps it free from mod cons such as telephones, computers and TVs.
Three months ago she was served with an eviction notice by East Herts District Council and South Anglia, which claimed she was ineligible to live there because it is rented by Sam.
The Observer was barred by the judge from yesterday's (Wednesday September 24) public hearing at Harlow county court after solicitors representing South Anglia objected.
Lesley tearfully said afterwards: "He said he can't change the law and that they want the building back. All they care about is what the law says, never mind the human costs. I'm utterly devastated and just don't know what to do."

Wine Compound May Protect Against Radiation Exposure

TUESDAY, Sept. 23 (HealthDay News) -- The antioxidant resveratrol, found in many plants and in red wine, may help protect against radiation exposure, say University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine researchers.
They gave acetyl-altered resveratrol to mice before exposure to radiation and found that the rodents' cells were protected from radiation-related damage. The team is conducting further studies to determine whether acetylated-resveratrol can help protect humans against radiation.
The findings were expected to be presented at the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology annual meeting, in Boston.
The research, led by Dr. Joel Greenberger, chairman of the department of radiation oncology, is overseen by the university's Center for Medical Countermeasures Against Radiation. The center's mandate is to identify and develop small molecules that can protect people against radiation in the event of a large-scale radiology or nuclear emergency.
"New, small molecules with radioprotective capacity will be required for treatment in case of radiation spills or even as countermeasures against radiological terrorism. Small molecules which can be easily stored, transported and administered are optimal for this, and so far acetylated resveratrol fits these requirements well," Greenberger said in a prepared statement.
"Currently, there are no drugs on the market that protect against or counteract radiation exposure. Our goal is to develop treatments for the general population that are effective and non-toxic," he added.

Most technologies with which humans interact are now heavily influenced by risk assessment. Following the assessment, risks are generally managed via regulation and communication strategies. The alleged justification of all of this is to achieve a high level of consumer protection. The recent changes in health and safety requirements in many people's working environment and the ever-growing attention to safety measures in motor vehicle design are just two areas that readily spring to mind.
In some areas, the amount of regulation appears to be disproportionate to the known risk, while in others, the lack of concern for risk or the tolerance of risk because of an assumed benefit derived from exposure to the source of risk, appears to expose the public to substantial risk.
The raft of regulation emanating from Brussels and targeting natural health products is an example of the former, while the reliance by the orthodox medical profession on pharmaceuticals is an example of the latter. Pharmaceutical-based healthcare continues despite evidence that mortality associated with the use of "properly prescribed" medicines is the fourth biggest killer after heart disease, stroke and cancer (JAMA. 1998; 279(15): 1200-5). The situation is comparable elsewhere, especially in the industrialised world. Another less well know example relates to the public health risks of low intensity electromagnetic fields (EMF) from cellular (mobile) phones and wireless devices.

Sudden infant death syndrome is the leading cause of death in the postneonatal period in developed countries. Postmortem studies show alterations in serotonin neurons in the brainstem of such infants. However, the mechanism by which altered serotonin homeostasis might cause sudden death is unknown. We investigated the consequences of altering the autoinhibitory capacity of serotonin neurons with the reversible overexpression of serotonin 1A autoreceptors in transgenic mice. Overexpressing mice exhibited sporadic bradycardia and hypothermia that occurred during a limited developmental period and frequently progressed to death. Moreover, overexpressing mice failed to activate autonomic target organs in response to environmental challenges. These findings show that excessive serotonin autoinhibition is a risk factor for catastrophic autonomic dysregulation and provide a mechanism for a role of altered serotonin homeostasis in sudden infant death syndrome.
