I’m cheap when it comes to electricity. I use a clothesline on (admittedly rare) rain-free days and our heat is mostly provided by a super-efficient woodstove. Always looking for ways to reduce my carbon footprint, I like the idea of this little gadget that helps shrink energy costs and identify the real energy suckers.

The Gadgeteer Hands On Review the-gadgeteer.com/review/kill_a_watt_ez_electricity_usage_monitor explains the Kill-A-Watt in extreme detail if you want the nitty-gritty, but basically you just plug the cell phone-sized device into a three-prong wall outlet, and plug in the appliance you want to monitor to find out how efficient (or wasteful) it really is.
The LCD display lets you monitor the kilowatt hour consumption of an appliance and learn how much it costs to run. It does lots of other stuff too…

It's not the first question in Terrafugia's FAQ, but it's an important one: How can a car fly? The answer: "In plane mode, the Transition has all of the necessary lift, propulsion, guidance, and control systems for a safe, light sport aircraft. It might be easier to think of the Transition as a light sport airplane that has the additional funcationality of being able to drive."

It's just a scale model now, but the Transition "personal air vehicle"--also called a "roadable plane"--could be scooting through the air in just a few years. That's the goal of start-up Terrafugia, which is aiming to produce a fully operational prototype by 2008 and at least a few production models by the end of the decade.

Terrafugia has a healthy helping of MIT cachet--and cash. It's a project of MIT grad student Carl Dietrich and colleagues at the school's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and is starting out with $30,000 from the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize.

What kind of gas mileage should we expect from a flying car? The Transition should get 30 miles a gallon in the air, Terrafugia says--even as it hit speeds of 120 miles per hour. Its payload is expected to be about 430 pounds, which should be enough for two adults and a couple of overnight bags.

The JL421 Badonkadonk is a completely unique, extremely rare land vehicle and battle tank. Designed with versatility in mind, the Donk can transport cargo or a crew of five internally or on the roof, and can be piloted from within the armored shell or from an exposed standing position through the hatch, thanks to special one-way steel mesh armor windows and a control stick that pivots up and down to allow piloting from the standing or seated positions. The interior is fully carpeted and cozy, with accent lighting and room for up to five people. A 400 watt premium sound system with PA is mounted to project sound both into the cabin and outward from behind the windows. The exterior is a steel shell with a rust patina, and features head and tail lights, turn signal lights, trim lighting, underbody lighting, fixed slats protecting the windows, and a unique industrial-strength rubberized flexible skirt that shields and protects the wheels to within an inch of the ground, while still allowing for enough flex to give clearance over bumpy and uneven terrain. Master power, ignition, all lighting, and stereo features are controlled from a single switchboard to the left of the driver, again accessible from either the seated or standing position. Standard drive is an air-cooled, 6hp Tecumseh gasoline (unleaded only) engine, with centrifugal clutch, giving the Donk a top speed of 40 mph. This vehicle is not licensed for use on public roads, and is intended as a recreational vehicle only. For all you non-Mac types, Microsoft has just released a new tool called 'Microsoft Photo Info. It runs on both XP and Vista, and is designed to enable quick and easy viewing and editing of photo metadata in explorer. Right-clicking on a photo in explorer shows a new context-menu item 'Photo Info' that launches the dialog shown here. This works on both single and multiple selections, allowing you to view and edit important metadata values. Cool feature: the tooltips in explorer are enhanced to show more relevant metadata as well.
